VUS (2LPE/3LPE) Pipe Coating
Extruded Polyethylene Coating of Steel Pipes
In addition to the production of large-diameter pipes, Serpukhov Pipe Plant performs two-layer and three-layer coating of steel pipes of reinforced (US) and highly reinforced (VUS) types in accordance with GOST 31448-2012, GOST 9.602-2016, and GOST R 51164-98.
The available coating diameters range from 530 to 1620 mm. At present, extruded polyethylene coating of VUS and US types is the most widely used and durable solution.
Applications
VUS pipe coating is a reliable method for protecting pipelines against corrosion and mechanical damage, ensuring long service life and cost efficiency. The use of VUS coating in various industries significantly reduces maintenance and repair costs, making it an essential solution for modern pipeline systems.
VUS coating is used in the following industries:
- Oil and Gas Industry — pipelines for transportation of oil and gas.
- Chemical Industry — pipelines exposed to aggressive chemical environments.
- Thermal Power Engineering — heat networks and heating systems.
- Water Supply and Sewerage — pipelines for transportation of water and wastewater.
When selecting coating materials, it is necessary to comply with GOST requirements and take into account the specific operating conditions of each pipeline.
2-Layer and 3-Layer VUS (Highly Reinforced) Pipe Coating
Types of Coating
Two-Layer VUS (VUS 2)
Structure: Adhesive sublayer + extruded polyethylene.
Structure: 1,8–2,5 mm.
Application: Reliable protection against corrosion and mechanical damage; used in aggressive environments.
Advantages: Good resistance to mechanical damage, simpler coating system.
Three-Layer VUS (VUS 3)
Structure: Primer (epoxy resins) + adhesive sublayer + extruded polyethylene.
Thickness: 2,5–3,5 mm (may vary).
Application: Designed for main pipelines requiring maximum durability and long-term performance.
Advantages: Improved adhesion, increased resistance to cathodic disbondment, extended service life.

Technology of External Anti-Corrosion Coating Application
Serpukhov Pipe Plant is equipped with high-tech European equipment, enabling the production of reliable and wear-resistant products.
Step #1
Preparation for Coating
Pipes supplied from the uncoiler are automatically placed onto the roller conveyor and connected into a continuous string using special connectors, ensuring uninterrupted technological process. The pipes are then fed into the shot blasting unit, where scale and rust are removed. After cleaning, the pipes are transferred to an inspection table equipped with a pipe rotator and inspection platform for visual inspection to detect possible defects. Once defects are eliminated, the connected pipe string is sent to the induction heating unit.
Step #2
Surface Preparation and Heating
Heated pipes enter an automatic powder epoxy primer chamber, where epoxy primer is applied under electrostatic field conditions.
Step #3
Application of Multilayer Coating
After epoxy primer application, an adhesive layer is applied to the pipes, followed by a polyethylene layer. Coating application is performed using extruders equipped with slot dies.
Step #4
Cooling and Primary Processing
The coated pipes then undergo a cooling process. After cooling, pipe ends are cleaned from the coating using a pipe beveling machine.
Step #5
Quality Control of Finished Products
Final quality control of coated pipes is carried out in accordance with customer requirements, including coating thickness inspection and coating continuity testing using a high-voltage holiday detector.
Warranty and Delivery
The warranty applies to all pipes supplied by Serpukhov Pipe Plant and complies with the warranty periods of the manufacturer, as well as the standards specified in the coating technical documentation. Certificates are provided for each batch.
Transportation of pipes with VUS coating requires careful handling. Specialized vehicles equipped with rubber-lined U-shaped supports and pipe cradles are used to secure the pipes and prevent bending, sliding, and impact during delivery.
